A swing driveway gate, single or double leaf, gives any entry a strong, classic look.

A single leaf gate uses one panel hinged to a post. A double leaf, or French gate, system uses two panels that meet at the center. Both styles automate cleanly, and both serve residential and estate properties across Los Angeles.

Encino and Calabasas estate entries have specific clearance demands

Swing gates are the dominant gate type across Encino, Beverly Hills and Calabasas.

Here is what most homeowners do not realize about inward swinging double gates: the leaf width equals the swing arc radius. A 6 foot leaf needs 6 feet of clear, level space behind it to open without catching grade or a parked car.

How a double leaf entry in Tarzana taught us to measure the swing arc twice

What we found

A grade change no one had priced in

The entry pillar positions and gate design were exactly right for the property. What had not been calculated was swing direction. The driveway climbed about 8 inches in the first 6 feet behind the gate. That grade change doesn't sound like much, but a 7 foot leaf swinging inward and uphill hits grade before it reaches 90 degrees of travel.

What that meant

Roughly 70 degrees of open, not full swing

Not enough clearance for a wide truck or an SUV towing anything. We caught this on the site visit before fabrication began. Properties with significant grade changes benefit from reviewing our gate solutions for sloped and hillside driveways before finalizing any swing direction.

What we changed

Outward swing on both leaves

We confirmed the setback from the street edge was enough to keep the open leaves clear of the sidewalk. It was. The gate now opens fully, and the street facing look actually suits the entry better than inward swing would have.

The swing arc is the travel path a gate leaf follows from closed to fully open. That radius equals the leaf width. Every obstruction, every grade change, every inch of setback matters inside that arc. We map it before the first post is set.

Single leaf or double leaf, here is how that decision gets made

Your entry width and post placement determine leaf configuration, not personal preference alone.

Single leaf

Handles entries up to about 14 feet cleanly, depending on the operator and hinge post load. Above that width, the leaf becomes very heavy and the cantilever stress on the hinge post increases significantly.

Double leaf

Splits the load across two posts and two operators. Each leaf is lighter and each operator works less hard. Dual operator synchronization keeps both leaves moving at matched speeds so they meet cleanly at the center latch.

If synchronization is off by even a half second, the leading leaf reaches the latch point before the trailing leaf arrives. One panel absorbs impact. Over time, that damages the latch hardware and stresses the frame. We set synchronization as part of commissioning, not as an afterthought.

How we approach every swing gate project

    Site diagnostics

    We measure entry width and confirm post anchor locations, then walk the driveway. We check grade in the first 10 feet behind the gate, note the setback from the street, and identify any obstructions inside the proposed swing arc: landscaping, slope changes, utility boxes, existing hardscape. All of it gets documented before we discuss leaf width or operator type. This stage is also when we review permit requirements with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety to confirm whether your project needs one before fabrication begins.

    Posts are set first, with footing depth and concrete diameter calculated for the leaf load. Hinge hardware is installed with alignment verified before the gate is hung. Outward swing is the correct choice for driveways that climb within the first several feet behind the gate. An inward swinging leaf on an uphill grade hits the slope before reaching full open. We confirm swing direction at the site visit, before anything is fabricated, so you get a gate that opens completely on day one.

Do both leaves on a double gate open and close together, or can one lag behind?

Both leaves must open and close at matched speeds, called dual operator synchronization. If one leaf leads, it reaches the latch point first and absorbs repeated impact. We program and test synchronization timing before we consider any installation complete. Binding and latch damage are the direct result of skipping this step.

What is the difference between an underground gate operator and an articulated arm operator for a swing gate?

Underground operators bury the motor in a concrete vault beneath the post, hiding all hardware from view. Articulated arm operators mount above ground and connect the motor to the gate leaf via a hinged mechanical arm. Underground units suit high design entries where visible hardware would compromise the look.
