Coastal aluminum fencing demands different material specs than a Valley installation.

Here's what most homeowners don't realize about coastal aluminum fencing: the standard powder coat used on most aluminum fence products is not formulated for marine exposure. Marine-grade powder coating, an electrostatically applied finish with a thicker film build and specialized bonding agents that resist salt air and moisture, is a separate product category. It's the spec we use in Malibu, Santa Monica and anywhere within a mile of the ocean.

For Valley properties, we choose aluminum where pool code, HOA requirements or long-term low-maintenance goals drive the decision. The spec is calibrated to UV intensity and temperature swings, not salt air. Same material category. Different configuration.

What the right aluminum spec actually looks like in the field

A homeowner in Pacific Palisades had replaced her perimeter fencing twice in eight years.

Both previous installations used standard ornamental steel. Unlike wrought iron fencing, which can be a strong option in drier inland environments, surface rust appeared on the steel rails within eighteen months in this coastal exposure zone. By year three, the pickets were showing pitting.

Every aluminum pool fence we install meets California Building Code Section 3109 from day one.

Pool code compliance under CBC Section 3109 governs pool barrier height, picket spacing and self-closing gate hardware. Aluminum is one of the primary materials used to meet these standards because it can be fabricated to precise dimensions without the structural compromises that come with wood or vinyl.

The picket spacing rule: no opening in a pool barrier can allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. That's the 4-inch sphere rule, and it governs every pool fence we build. We run those dimensions in fabrication, not as a field adjustment after the fact.

    Site assessment and material specification

    We note proximity to the coast, pool presence, slope grade and HOA restrictions where applicable. We verify local jurisdiction permit requirements, since Malibu, Santa Monica and Los Angeles City each have their own fencing codes. We measure the run, identify grade changes, and confirm the alloy spec before ordering material.

    Posts go in concrete footings sized to panel height and local wind load requirements. San Fernando Valley properties face strong Santa Ana wind events, post depth and concrete volume account for that. Panels are set level or racked to grade depending on terrain. For properties requiring motorized access, we coordinate gate opener and motor installation as part of the complete aluminum gate system. All powder coating is inspected for coverage consistency before we close the job.
